Low-VOC paints release far fewer volatile organic compounds — the fumes you smell in fresh paint — which makes them much healthier for indoor air, especially in bedrooms, nurseries and living areas. Interior and exterior paints are built very differently, though: interiors prioritise low odour and washability, while exteriors have to survive UV, rain and temperature swings, so you shouldn't swap one for the other.
What VOCs are and why they matter indoors
VOCs are the compounds that evaporate off paint as it dries and cures, and they're what gives fresh paint its smell. Indoors, in an enclosed space, they can linger and bother people who are sensitive — a real consideration in bedrooms, kids' rooms and homes with anyone who has asthma or allergies.
Quality interior ranges are now low-VOC or near zero-VOC as standard, so you get healthier air and far less odour without giving up durability.
Why exterior paint is formulated differently
Exterior paint has a harder job: blocking UV, resisting mould and algae, and flexing through hot days and cold nights. Achieving that often means more additives, and exterior products aren't formulated with indoor air quality as the priority. That's why they aren't a good choice for interior walls, even if you're chasing durability.
Ventilation during exterior work matters far less because the fumes disperse outdoors — inside, ventilation and a low-VOC product both count.
Choosing healthier paint for your home
Indoors, we default to washable low-VOC acrylic systems, particularly for bedrooms and children's rooms, and we ventilate as we go.
