These mean the coating has stopped protecting the surface — and repainting before it worsens is far cheaper than repairing rotten timber later.
The signs to watch for
Outside, look for faded, washed-out colour; chalking, where a powdery film comes off on your hand; flaking, peeling or blistering paint; cracking and checking in the coating; gaps opening at joints and around joinery; bare or greying timber; and mould, moss or persistent damp patches. Any one of these is worth acting on.
Inside, the signs are more about wear and appearance — scuffs and marks that won't wash off, water or smoke staining, and tired, dated colours that make the whole room feel older than it is.

Paint is protection, not just colour. Once it fails and timber is left exposed, moisture gets in, rot can follow, and your next repaint needs far more preparation and repair — which costs more. Catch it at the fading or chalking stage and it's usually a straightforward wash-and-repaint.

How do I know if it's just dirty or actually failing?
Wash a small patch. If the colour comes back and the surface is sound, it's dirt. If it stays chalky, flaking or faded, the coating is failing and it's time to repaint.
Can I just paint over flaking paint?
No — flaking and failed paint has to be scraped, sanded and primed first, or the new coat will lift and fail again in the same spots.
How often should I repaint?
